| The Benchmark |
The Benchmark: Manor Snacks Cafe, Nuneaton
The benchmark chosen for the English breakfast is the Number Two English served at the Manor Snacks Cafe, Manor Court Road, Nuneaton. We do not claim this to be the best in the world but it is a good example of the type, offering a three egg benchmark by which all others can be judged. Cafes which serve a better breakfast will earn more eggs, those which fail to live up to the standards set by the manor will earn fewer eggs.
The Manor is typical of the many unpretentious cafes that may be found the length and breadth of the country. Aimed at the local working populace rather than passing tourists, the Manor is situated in a side street and offers basic but entirely adequate facilities. It is clean, opens early in the day and with friendly staff who are more than willing to vary the menu and prepare the food to one's liking. If you like soggy toast then you can have soggy toast, if you like your bacon crispy then you can have it crispy. Service is prompt and always with a smile.
The Number Two English
Priced at a very reasonable £2.95, the Number Two English comprises (along with a generous mug of either tea or coffee) :
- Two rashers of bacon
- Two evenly browned sausages, crisp on the outside yet still tender within
- A goodly spoonful of mushrooms,
- Two fried eggs, the yolk still runny, and served sunny side up
- A spoonful of tinned tomatoes,
- A portion of baked beans in tomato sauce
- Two slices of buttered toast
The breakfast is served on large plain plates with stainless steel cutlery. Salt, pepper, tomato ketchup and brown sauce are freely available in good measures at no extra cost.
A range of other breakfasts is available, including the gargantuan Number Three "Monster" Breakfast at £4.95.
A wide range of other snacks - toasted sandwiches, hot and cold filled rolls and simple hot meals such as pie and chips is also available. If something you fancy doesn't appear on the menu, ask ! You'll probably find that all reasonable requests can be met ...
