The Ship, Bala
The Ship, a Burtonwood Inn prominently sited in Bala's main street, offers comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation at a reasonable price. A simple, homely place frequented with equal enthusiasm by locals and tourists alike, the Ship's welcome is as warm as any we have found in the Principality of Wales. Twin and double rooms are available at £ 21.00 per person per night and these are warm and comfortable, if furnished a little delicately for mountain bikers and climbers !
The two comfortable bars serve a good variety of beers and food is available for most of the day. If the simple wholesome fare on offer at The Ship is not to one's taste, there are several restaurants close by which serve excellent and far more exotic dishes, if in smaller portions and at higher cost !
The Breakfast
Included in the price of a night's stay, or available separately throughout the morning at £ 4.95, the standard breakfast at the Ship comprises: (along with a pot of either tea or coffee) :
- Two rashers of bacon
- Two very tasty sausages, (crisp, succulent pork on our last visit)
- Mushrooms
- A fried egg, the yolk firm, and served sunny side up
- Two grilled tomatoes
- Brown and white toast, (as many slices as we could manage)
The breakfast is served in the bar and a notable feature of The Ship was the willingness of the staff to provide breakfast at a time suitable to ourselves, be it early or late in the morning. No rigidly enforced breakfast times here !
Salt, pepper, mustard, tomato ketchup and brown sauce are freely available, as are butter and marmalade or jam for the toast. Cereals are also available.
One of our party being vegetarian gave our host the opportunity to prepare a special breakfast the like of which we have not seen elsewhere. A first course of Italian cheese and tomatoes, served with a lettuce and herb garnish, was quickly followed by a large plateful of eggs, cheese, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and toast which made the carnivores amongst us envious ! Where lesser establishments might take the opportunity to serve a simple omelette, if they offered a vegetarian option at all, The Ship definitely goes an extra mile in ensuring customer satisfaction.
Opening: B&B is available from Easter onwards
